How Residential Solar Works

Residential solar energy is a clean, renewable, and cost-effective way for homeowners to generate their own electricity and reduce their dependence on the grid. In this blog post, we’ll explain how residential solar works and the key components that make it possible.

First, let’s start with the basics of solar energy. Solar panels, also known as photovoltaic (PV) panels, convert the energy from the sun into electricity. The solar panels are made up of photovoltaic cells, which are made of silicon and are designed to capture the sun’s energy and convert it into direct current (DC) electricity.

The DC electricity is then sent to an inverter, which converts it into alternating current (AC) electricity. This is the type of electricity that is used in homes and businesses and is compatible with the grid.

From there, the AC electricity is sent to the main electrical panel in the home, also known as the load center, where it is distributed to power various appliances and devices. Any excess electricity that is generated but not used by the home is sent back to the grid through a process called net metering. This allows homeowners to receive credits on their utility bill for the excess energy they produce.

One of the key advantages of residential solar is that it can be customized to fit the specific energy needs of a home. The number and size of the solar panels can be adjusted based on the amount of electricity a home uses, as well as the available space on the roof or property.

Another important aspect of residential solar is the cost. While the initial investment for solar panels can be significant, the long-term savings on electricity costs can be substantial. In addition, many states and local governments offer incentives and tax credits to encourage homeowners to install solar panels.
